Sandy Hill dates back to the 1870s. Prior to Rockcliffe Park, Sandy Hill was the wealthiest and most prestigious neighbourhood in the Ottawa area up until the early 20th century. The area is subject to the influences of more recent developments of Rideau Street. South of Laurier is South Sandy Hill. The far south of the neighbourhood below Mann Avenue is known as Strathcona Heights.

It is a diverse neighbourhood of young and old, rich and poor. Very wealthy people live near the embassies of the Rideau River, but closer to the university, there are more students, senior citizens, and new immigrants with more diversified income levels. A mixture of different nationalities is increased all the embassies around.
