What to Expect

Like many of its west end neighbors, Dufferin Grove has the lifestyle options covered. With borders on Bloor, Dovercourt, Dundas and College this area is walkable and well served by the TTC. The services and amenities available to this area are more like the options downtown but here you can live in a detached house and spend afternoons at the park. If you prefer there are high rise and low rise  buildings as well. For those that like to cook there are national grocery retailers and the Dufferin Grove Farmer’s market to choose from. For those who like to shop, there are a big mall and independent retailers to choose from. You can live and work in the area or commute into downtown. There are two high schools to choose from, public and French Catholic. If you prefer your recreation to have a little urban edge, there is a revitalized portion of formerly industrial building that will have you covered. There is an energetic nightlife and street life on Bloor, which of course has subway access as well.

Demographics

This is by far a working age community. There are 25% fewer young kids and 16% fewer seniors than the city average. Most people live alone is high and low rise apartments, at least 50% of the community lives in a low rise building. There are more couples without children than couples with children. The kids who do reside in the neighborhood are mostly between the ages of six and fourteen. The seniors who live in the area favor living with family by nearly 3 to 1. The area has a medium density with plenty of shared outdoor space, tree lined interior streets and sidewalks throughout. Most people are speaking English at home but many are also speaking Portuguese and some residents speak Spanish.  More than 60% of the working age community has attained post secondary education. The average household income is just $55,000, well under the city average. There are exactly the average number of low income families at 19%.

Lifestyle

The appeal of Dufferin Grove is easy to see. It starts out with all of the action and amenities of Bloor st.. This stretch has restaurants, coffee shops and cafes, quick service food and fresh produce vendors. There are family friendly services like laundry and dentists. There are pharmacies and places to cash cheque. You can buy a bicycle or have one repaired, which may come in handy, this is a bike friendly community. Many of the major banks have outlets and there is a branch of the Toronto Public Library. You haven’t even left Bloor yet. On Dufferin you’ll find two of the highlights for this neighborhood. First, the Dufferin Mall, where you can find major retailers, brand names and kiosks for Service Ontario. The second find is the Dufferin Grove Park. Here you can enjoy a public garden, mini restaurant outlet and brick oven. There are green spaces and walking trails. The beautiful meditation path sits north of the playground structure. There is an enormous sandpit and play cottage for kids. It also has one of the few fire pits in the city. This is also where the Farmer’s market is held. The all organic market is a weekly neighborhood event, that is very well attended. If you prefer your recreation indoors, a few blocks west, on Sterling avenue there are a host of alternative fitness and sport facilities. You can play league soccer or take a gymnastics class or you can delve into world of circus arts and axe throwing. 

What you'll love

Food Access. The concept of a food desert will be hard to imagine when you live in this utopia. Even the local No Frills, has frills, with fresh seafood and butcher counters. The prices are very competitive because there is a Walmart in the same plaza. But, if you need to balance that out, every week you’ll have your chance for fresh, local organics from the farmers.  TTC Access. The Dufferin grove  neighborhood is packed with so many great things that you might forget it’s on the subway line and has the streetcar on the south side.
