The One Where You Move to Toronto

BY Reilly Beesley/March 7, 2022

Thinking about moving to Toronto? Curious what it’s like actually living in the city? Here’s what you need to know. Toronto is the electric pulse of Canada and home to around 3 million people. It’s big, it’s vibrant and it can be quite busy. It’s also filled with some of the friendliest people and brimming with endless things to see and do (you can literally never be bored in this city).

Here are a few other things we think you should know about moving to and living in Toronto.

People

Toronto is known world-wide for its richly diverse population. And fun fact, over 51% of residents were born outside of Canada. The city is absolutely brimming with people from all walks of life, making Toronto one of a kind. Despite all the hustle and bustle and fast-paced walking, when it comes to big city living Torontonians are known for being a friendly bunch.

Weather

Not only diverse in its people, but also in weather. Prepare yourself for four distinct seasons and everything in between when living in Toronto. While Toronto’s winters are typically less snowy and not as cold as some other cities in Ontario, you will get your fair share of cold weather and snowy days. You’ve been warned. From hot summers to chilly winters, you’ll get the chance to enjoy all the different activities that come with each season.

Lifestyle

Toronto has an astonishing 140 (and counting!) neighbourhoods, with each offering its own unique vibe and spin on the city. If you are considering making the move, and are able to, spend some time exploring the different neighbourhoods and see which one may suit you best. Along with the countless nooks and crannies to find yourself in, the city offers a bewildering number of things to do and see. Known for its colourful and vibrant nightlife, live music, and a thriving art and culture scene, it truly leaves no room for a dull moment. Sipping a coffee at one of the endless aesthetically pleasing cafes or window shopping in the glitzy part of the city (we see you Yorkville) it’s easy to fall in love with the city. No judgment towards anyone’s overpriced coffee, but the great thing about Toronto is also all the free things you can get up to. Free museums, galleries, and parks, oh my! With endless options Toronto has no trouble living up to its iconic reputation as the heart of Canada. Another bonus is that the city is extremely walkable, bike friendly and (while some may still complain about it) Toronto is ranked as having one of the best public transportation systems in the country. Which is good news since living in the city your feet and public transportation will become your new best friends, as driving around isn’t always optimal.

Food

If you’re a foodie or you just like to eat, you’re in luck. Toronto is a culinary destination and a foodie’s paradise. If you know you know. A true delight to the senses, Toronto specializes in everything from quirky quaint mom and pop shops to lavish restaurants with renowned chefs. Also, can we just say food trucks. Everywhere and offering everything, from every ethnic cuisine you could think of to Canadian classics like poutine. Brunch to late night munchies, there is a truck for that. The innovation in Toronto’s food scene is next level and let us tell you, this city is where your wildest food dreams become a reality.

Events

Toronto is bursting at the seams with events and festivals to keep your calendar full year long. From family friendly midway rides and sticky cotton candy fingers at the annual Canadian National Exhibition to the world-renowned Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). People from all over flock to Toronto to attend all the events and festivals the city offers. When it comes to Toronto’s event and festival scene, you’ll be pleased to know that Toronto offers the nichest of the niche. Guaranteed, there is something for everyone. Some of the city’s popular festivals include Canadian Music Week, TD Toronto Jazz Festival, Caribbean Festival, Hot Docs Documentary Festival, Veld Music Festival and Toronto’s Pride Festival. Toronto is teeming with one of the best culture and arts scenes around.

Work

Leading the way in business, finance, and tech, along with being home to countless national and global head offices, Toronto has some of the highest paying jobs in Canada. A hotspot for techies and entrepreneurs, many people find Toronto a desirable place for their start-ups and business ventures. If you’re considering moving to the city and don’t already have a job lined up, just know you may need to pack your patience on the job hunt front. While Toronto is plentiful in opportunities there also tends to be more competition.

Education

The streets are alive with the sound of students. Seriously. Toronto boasts numerous post-secondary institutions. The city is filled with students who keep the city feeling young and alive. University of Toronto is one of the world’s top research-intensive schools and has put both Canada and Toronto on the map for education. The University of Toronto, Ryerson University, York University, Humber College and George Brown College are just a handful of post-secondary institutions in the heart of the city.

Living Costs

Housing, food, childcare, and transportation are ranked as some of the most expensive in the country. Like any city, the closer you live to downtown, the more you can expect to pay. Due to the cost of living in the city, many people seek out neighbourhoods outside of the core and in the surrounding area to better suit their budget. Condo living in the city is quite common and many singles, couples and families opt for this lifestyle, as it is one of the most affordable ways to live in the city. Toronto can be an expensive place to live but the plus side is that there are plenty of options for all kinds of budgets and lifestyles. And that’s the beautiful thing about this dazzling and dynamic city.
